“Just as your car runs smoothly and requires less energy to run faster and farther when the wheels are in alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.” -Brian Tracy
Okay, so it’s no secret that I believe in getting your mind right to get your body right. It’s so important to push yourself to your best level every day, and to raise that bar every day. If you can’t do it for yourself, find a support system (a workout partner, a family member, a supportive co-worker) that will drive you and empower you every day to become 1% better!
I am going to share 3 exercises I learned from author of THE IMPACT BODY PLAN, Todd Durkin, that helped me take the first step to becoming 1% better each day…
1) Take a personal “now” inventory.
Set a timer for 20 minutes and write down what you think and how you currently feel about your life. And be honest, no cheating! Answer questions such as:
What do I look like right now? How do I feel right now? How do I feel about my physical conditioning? What frustrates me most about my health, fitness, and nutrition habits?
Here’s some hard ones…
What can I do better? What about the quality of my life overall? How do I feel about my relationships? My career? My finances? My peer group? My spiritual life? How long since I’ve had fun and adventure? And, most important, What would I like to change?
Write, write, and write some more! If you go past 20 minutes, that’s okay. Write down how you feel, and be honest, remember…no cheating.
Once you’re done, save this. It’s a snapshot that you will appreciate later on.
2) What’s your decree? Also known as your vision statement.
I have been a Fitness Professional for a good while now and I run into people that train and train and never get anywhere. The main reason is, they probably don’t know where they are going. There’s no vision, you must write down your vision. This statement can be several paragraphs long. It announces to the world, or maybe just you, what you want to happen in your life. For all statements and purposes of this exercise, we are going to do it for the next 12-weeks. This is something you will read each morning to inspire you to get moving, and get 1% better each day.
Step 1… Re-read your personal “now” inventory. Fast-forward 12 weeks from now and envision how you will look and feel then (if you approach every day 1% better than the day before).
What do you look like? What do you feel like? What is your life like?
Here are some tips…12 weeks from now:
How many days a week will you be exercising? What are you eating? How is your energy? How much do you weigh? What changes have you made to your personal life? How are your relationships going? What changes have you made in how you approach your job? What are you doing differently to live a more fulfilling life?
When you write this down, you write it as if it has already occurred. You write it as if you are in the future 12 weeks from now and you are reflecting back on your journey. You begin with this sentence:
“I am so happy and thankful now that ______”
Remember, it is 12 weeks from today and the changes you desire have already occurred. You made it, and your vision is complete.
3. Summarize your vision. When you are finished writing it down, condense it down so that it fits on one index card.
Select the key words that hit home…deep down to your emotional core…that move you and inspire you. This is your IMPACT card. Use it, read it every morning, think of it as a ticket to a transformed life.
Thank you Todd Durkin for this amazing, game-changing exercise!
